RECOMMENDED READING!

From the time you enter the first chapter, the book captures your attention and engages you.
"A Step in the Write Direction" guides today's writer on a path that ultimately leads to publishing success.
I found it to be an inviting, informative, inspiring read.
Even more impressive is that it resonates with artistic integrity.
As a writer, poet, columnist, editor, instructor, and author, I have read many, many reference books to increase my knowledge base and my literary know-how; this one is among the best!
The purchase of this book can save writers of all levels and genres hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars in reference books and instructional classes.
It's a must read. I give it 5 ***** stars!

OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD!

I did the "happy dance" til I was dizzy!

The long awaited for package had arrived at a little after 3 p.m.

The postal delivery lady could not have known that it was as valuable to me as gold-- evident by the fact that she had carelessly tossed the package face down in the snow on my front porch.

I hurriedly tore open the manila envelope, and was delighted to discover, "A STEP IN THE WRITE DIRECTION" by Donna Clark Goodrich.

It was beautifully designed and packaged, and exceeded my expectations.

AND THERE I WAS IN BLACK AND WHITE, MY OWN CHAPTER--well actually I was a chapter in the appendix--pages 299-300 to be exact.

Just the same, I felt like a supporting actress in an award winning movie!

"I'd like to thank my mom who always believed in me..."

It made my day, my year!

The review to follow tomorrow as soon as I come off cloud nine!

ANOTHER CUP OF COFFEE!

Last year was my first year as an instructor for www.coffeehouseforwriters.com.
Although I had been an instructor for many years, (in academia, at writing centers, and in Corporate America), this was my first experience teaching online.

The verdict is in: I loved it! And you will too.

Online classes allow you to work at your own pace in your own space! (Hey, I just made that up and it rhymed!) :-)

Besides the convenience factor, the quality of the experience is great---you get personalized attention, many of the classes are affordable and interactive, you get to skip the crazy commutes, and the instructors and administrators are knowledgeable and friendly.

If you missed the 1st deadline for my new class "DON'T QUERY, BE HAPPY!" I have an opportunity to offer it again in February.

Don't miss out on the chance to earn while you learn and perhaps put a dent in those New Year's resolutions.:-)

For more details see: www.coffeehouseforwriters.com

I hope to see you there!

MY 2010 WRITING RESOLUTIONS!

By nature, I tend to be very goal oriented.
Some folks might even say too much.:-)

But for me, a life without progress holds little purpose.
Are you feeling me here?

As such, I've come up with a few resolutions that I thought I'd post and put out there into
the universe!

So here for the first time...drum roll please!

1). I vow to expand my writing portfolio and my client base. I'm seeking to add at least four new ones by year end.

2). I vow to market more aggressively and consistently. I tend to indulge more in the writing process than the pitching.

3). I vow to keep forging forward amidst rejections, late payments, computer craziness, and life's daily demands.

4). I vow to update this Blog weekly (unless my computer or my health is down).

5). I vow to seriously seek agent representation for 2 self-help books--1 relationship, 1 how-to for writers.

6). "keep 6 in play."

7). Purchase, market and sell more of my poetry and anthology books.

8). Buy E-books from Hope Clark to identify more paying markets.

9). Purchase Writers Guide to 2010 (I'm quoted in this issue!--I think:-)

10). Sell to reprint markets.

How about you? What are you resolving to do better or differently this year as a writer?

I dare you to share and boldly step out there.:-)

10 Ways to Reach Your Full Writing Potential in 2010!

It's January.

The typical time when folks find themselves constructing resolutions and promises for self-improvement and a better life.

Perhaps you're one of them.
If so, Kudos to you!

Progress is always a beautiful thing in my book.

But progress always comes with a price.

It's impossible to move forward in 2010 without a little self-reflection and analysis regarding previous practices and developmental needs. Wouldn't you agree?

When it comes to writing, many scribes are finding that their pay doesn't match their productivity, which leaves them scratching their head in frustration. Don't be one of them.

Here are 10 things to help you reach greater heights this year as a writer.

1. Learn from your mistakes---We've all made them. Whether it was taking on an assignment without a written contract, making a regrettable remark on a Blog, not devoting enough time to marketing, or other mishaps, assess and apply.

2. Know your strengths and weaknesses---In my capacity as a writing coach and instructor, I encounter so many creative artists who are clueless as to what they do well and what they need to improve. Never let your EGO stand in the way of your EXCELLENCE.

3. Have realistic expectations---In this business, it's rare to find an "overnight success".
Be willing to hone your craft in order to increase your cash! Know that you must pay your dues first, success and fame will come further down the line. Don't consider yourself "too big" to write for free. Evaluate each situation on its own merit.

4. Get "trusted advice"--- Few realize that not everyone is qualified to guide you on your writing path with honest, useful feedback. Though members of your church might serve as a great source of inspiration, unless they are published authors themselves, don't treat their words of wisdom as "gospel." Seek a mentor who has experience in areas that you seek to venture. Or join a local writers' group in your area.

5. Don't overlook the small stuff---No matter how skilled you are with the written word, poor grammatical and spelling ability will brand you as an amateur and prevent you from elevating to a higher level. Trust me, in the big picture it matters.

6. Do it Now! Procrastination is the enemy.:-) Stop putting off taking that writing class, or buying business cards, or revamping your Blog. Remember that a journey of a thousand miles begins with that first step.

PART 2 TO FOLLOW THIS WEEK!

Enjoy your day.

DAY 2 PART 2

7. Learn to be your own biggest fan and worst critic--- Accurate assessment of the quality of your work can greatly reduce your rejection rate with editors. It's one of the reasons that I've never needed to be a part of a critique group. (Of course it probably helps that I've worn the hat of editor too.) Make sure to read your work aloud; it's the best way to catch errors and to improve your flow.

8. Treat writing as a business---Always conduct yourself with professionalism, observe protocol, invest in your success, and have a plan B.

9. Recognize that there is great truth to the adage, "the early bird catches the worm." Get up early and get going! It will make a real difference in your productivity and your bottom line.

10. Read! It's virtually impossible to become a good writer unless you visit the words of other successful writers to determine what appeals to a reading audience, and what works vs. what doesn't.

That's it for now folks.

Do you agree or disagree? What tips will you take with you to enhance your writing career this year? Do tell!
